The Role of the Perfomer: Rihanna

    Rihanna is one of the most influential performers of the 21st century, known for transforming songs into cultural moments. Her ability to interpret, adapt, and embody a wide range of musical styles highlights the essential role performers play in shaping how audiences experience music.

    Born as Robyn Rihanna Fenty in 1988 in Saint Michael, Rihanna grew up influenced by Caribbean music, including reggae and dancehall. She was discovered as a teenager and brought to the United States, where she signed with Def Jam Recordings under the guidance of Jay-Z. One of her earliest hits Pon de Replay (2005) introduced her as a dance-pop artist but over time she continuously evolved her sound. This adaptability became a defining part of her musical journey and has allowed her to remain relevant and influential across decades (Recording Academy, n.d.).


    Two performances that showcase Rihanna’s interpretive power are Umbrella and Stay. Umbrella, released in 2007 and written in America by The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, and others, became a global hit. Rihanna’s delivery of the song emphasizes rhythm and phrasing, particularly in the repeated “ella” which she turns into a memorable hook. Her vocal tone adds a sense of resilience and transforms the song into an anthem of loyalty and strength. Critics note that this track played a major role in defining her global image (Billboard, 2017).


    In contrast, Stay (2012), written in America by Mikky Ekko and Justin Parker, reveals a more vulnerable side of Rihanna’s artistry. The stripped-down arrangement places focus on emotional expression. Her use of dynamics allows her to gradually building intensity throughout the song. The simplicity of her phrasing and the breathiness in her voice create an intimate atmosphere, demonstrating how performers can communicate emotion even with minimal instrumentation.

    Performers like Rihanna are essential because they serve as interpreters who bring songs to life in unique ways. While the songwriters create the structure, performers can shape how that structure is experienced. Rihanna’s ability lies in her ability to blend vocal delivery with visual identity and cultural influence. This is especially evident in major live performances, such as her appearance at the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show.



    In my opinion, Rihanna’s performances stand out because of her control of musical elements like timbre, rhythm, and dynamics. In Umbrella, the steady beat and repetitive hook create a strong sense of groove which keeps the song engaging and memorable. In Stay, the slower tempo and minimal texture highlight her emotional delivery. These elements reinforce her role as an interpreter as someone who uses musical tools to reshape a song’s emotional impact.

    Ultimately, Rihanna shows that performers are just as important as composers. Through her voice, style, and interpretation, she transforms songs into lasting cultural experiences, showing that performance is an art form in its own right.

     For this assignment, I selected "Mr Noah" by Panda Bear. The song was released as the lead single from his 2015 album "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper." Panda Bear, wrote and produced the track himself. He is also a founding member of Animal Collective, a group known for its experimental and psychedelic sound.
